Florida Atlantic University, commonly referred to as simply FAU or Florida Atlantic, is a public, coeducational, research university located in Boca Raton, which is a city in Palm Beach County, in the US state of Florida, with a population of nearly 86 400 inhabitants, estimated during the 2006 census.
FAU opened its doors in 1964, as the first public university in Southeast Florida, as well as the 1st university in the nation to offer only upper-division and graduate level courses. In 2008, the university’s enrollment increased from an initial number of 867 students to approximately 27 000, as of 2008, from more than 130 countries, 48 states and the District of Columbia.
FAU offers more than 145 master’s, bachelor’s and doctoral degree programs through 10 colleges, which include the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing and the College of Engineering and Computer Science, also offering its students two honors options: the University Scholars Program and the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College.

The athletic teams from FAU are known as the Florida Atlantic Owls, who compete in the NCAA's Division I Sun Belt Conference, in 18 varsity sports. In 2006, the football team finished 6 wins and 6 losses in regular season play, being invited to the Motor City Bowl. During the 2006-2007 season, the men’s basketball team was named "one of the Sun Belt Conference’s top offensive teams", with a "scary offense", earning its reputation of the "best shooting team in the conference".
